Field Day June 26-27

June 26 @ 2:00 pm - June 27 @ 2:00 pm EDT

Members of the AARA are excited to return to an in-person AARL FIELD DAY exercise and event for 2021!  The annual exercise, the largest all-volunteer radio communications exercise in the world, will be held this year from June 26-27, 2021 and involves local Amateur (HAM) Radio operators and tens of thousands of other operators across North America!  These exercises help maintain and build proficiency for the HAM operators which are often called in to support various emergency communication and community events.

The AARA also has many members that are also part of the Amateur Radio Emergency Services (ARES) which is a corps of trained amateur radio operator volunteers which can be called out to assist in public service matters and provide additional emergency communications.  Field Day is an opportunity for additional training in these missions which will start at 11:00am on June 26th at Fort Fairfield Riverside Park with the setup of a 100ft portable tower/antenna, and communications trailer before normal field day operations begin at 2:00pm.  Operations will run for a straight 24-hours and will work as a group to run radio communication sessions, working contacts (“working CQ”) to as many other stations around the world as possible; logging critical contact information and coordinating these logs with the American Radio Relay League (ARRL) as a club under callsign K1FS.

This annual event was started in 1933 and has been held every year since, outside a pause for WWII from 1942-1946.  There are currently over 750,000 licensed HAM operators in North America who donate the equivalent of millions of dollars per year providing emergency and public service communications for various states of emergency and community events such as the local annual Can-Am International Dog Sled Race here in Northern Maine.

This is a public event where all members of the community are welcome to stop by to experience and learn more about Amateur Radio in the Digital Age.  A public information table will be setup with information at the event.  Find more information about our organization at K1FS.org or on Facebook by searching K1FS.

The AARA would like to invite the media for an in-person interview session any time, including filming of setup with the AARA President James Jalbert, ARES/RACES Emergency Communications Leader Roy Woods, PIO Seth Thomas, or other members of the group.
